Product Overview

Neomycin/Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension is a sterile, prescription-only anti-infective and anti-inflammatory combination eye drop used for the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where there is a risk of bacterial infection.

Formulated by Bausch + Lomb, this multi-action ophthalmic solution combines:

  • Neomycin sulfate (3.5 mg/mL) – a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic

  • Polymyxin B sulfate (10,000 units/mL) – an antibiotic effective against gram-negative bacteria

  • Dexamethasone (0.1%) – a potent corticosteroid for reducing inflammation

This product provides convenient, effective, and synergistic treatment for managing inflammatory eye conditions with suspected or confirmed bacterial involvement.

Indications for Use

  • Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)

  • Conjunctivitis (palpebral and bulbar)

  • Keratitis

  • Chronic anterior uveitis

  • Corneal injury due to burns, chemicals, or foreign bodies

  • Post-surgical inflammation with risk of infection

This combination is ideal when both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial actions are desired.

Clinical Benefits

  • Dual-action formula: Combines antibiotics and corticosteroids in one solution

  • Patient convenience: Single-drop therapy improves compliance

  • Broad-spectrum coverage: Effective against many common ocular pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp., Neisseria spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

  • Fast-acting relief: Reduces swelling, redness, and irritation while treating bacterial infection

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 1 to 2 drops into the conjunctival sac(s) every 4 to 6 hours

  • In severe infections, dosing may be increased to every hour, then tapered as the condition improves

  • Do not use beyond 10 days without monitoring intraocular pressure (IOP)

  • Not more than 20 mL should be initially prescribed

Contraindications

  • Viral eye infections (e.g., herpes simplex keratitis, varicella, vaccinia)

  • Mycobacterial or fungal ocular infections

  • Hypersensitivity to neomycin, polymyxin B, dexamethasone, or other formulation ingredients

Warnings & Precautions

  • Not for injection or intraocular use

  • Prolonged use may increase IOP, risk of glaucoma, or cause posterior subcapsular cataracts

  • Use with caution in patients with glaucoma or thin corneas

  • Potential for secondary infections due to immune suppression

  • Avoid contact with dropper tip to prevent contamination

  • Vision may be temporarily blurred after application – do not drive or operate machinery immediately after use

Use in Specific Populations

  • Pregnancy & Nursing: Use only if benefits outweigh potential fetal or neonatal risks

  • Pediatrics: Safety and efficacy not established under age 2

  • Geriatrics: No significant differences in response compared to younger adults

Adverse Reactions

  • Allergic sensitization, especially to neomycin

  • Elevated intraocular pressure and optic nerve damage
