Indications and Usage
Indicated only for diluting or dissolving drugs for intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injection, according to the instructions of the manufacturer of the drug to be administered.
Dosage and Administration
The volume used is dictated by the concentration, dose, and route of administration recommended for the prepared drug. Inspect visually for particulate matter and discoloration before use.
Warnings and Precautions
- Not for use in neonates; the benzyl alcohol preservative has been associated with serious and fatal gasping syndrome in newborns
- Do not use for fluid or sodium chloride replacement
- Not for epidural or intrathecal use
- Use preservative-free sodium chloride where a benzyl alcohol-free solution is required, such as catheter flushing
Contraindications
Contraindicated in neonates due to benzyl alcohol toxicity, and must not be used for fluid or sodium chloride replacement or by the epidural route.
Adverse Reactions
Reactions may include febrile response, local tenderness, injection-site abscess, tissue necrosis or infection, and venous thrombosis or phlebitis extending from the injection site, as well as extravasation.
Storage and Handling
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), USP controlled room temperature.
