About the S5 Inserter

Placing a scleral or hybrid lens is a two handed job, and most of the difficulty is not the lens itself but the eyelids. The S5 Inserter was designed by Dr. Fayiz Mahgoub to take the lens out of your fingers and hold it in position, so both hands are free to keep the lids open against the blink reflex.

How it is built

The lens sits level in a holder on a stand, which keeps insertion solution in the bowl of the lens instead of running out down your hand. Less spilled fluid means less chance of an air bubble underneath once the lens is on. An LED light source sits in the base to help you line your eye up with the center of the lens.

The two models

• S5 Inserter, the full size model, with a height that adjusts from 10.5 inches to 2 feet 6 inches. It is set up for insertion while standing at a counter.
• S5 Mini Inserter, the smaller version, easier to pack and to store in a shared bathroom.

How to choose

If you insert your lenses standing at a bathroom counter, the adjustable model is the one built for that height. If you travel often or share a small space, the Mini is the practical pick. Whichever you choose, it is worth asking the professional who fitted your lenses to watch your technique once with the tool in front of you, since technique and tool work together.
