Myopia management · Soft contact lenses

MiSight 1 day A daily soft lens labeled to slow myopia.

MiSight 1 day (omafilcon A) from CooperVision is a single-use soft lens with FDA approval to correct nearsightedness and to slow its progression in children who begin wear between ages 8 and 12. Most contact lens myopia programs in the US are built around it.

2019FDA premarket approval, P180035
8–12Age range at the start of treatment
59%Slower refractive progression over 3 years vs. single vision
52%Less axial elongation in the same trial

How it works

Dual-focus optics that put defocus to work

The lens corrects distance blur while also projecting myopic defocus in front of the retina, the optical signal researchers link to slower eye growth. Children wear it like any other daily lens and throw it away at night.

Correction plus treatment zones

CooperVision's ActivControl design alternates rings that hold the child's distance power with rings that add myopic defocus.

A defined label

Healthy eyes, age 8 to 12 at the first fit, −0.75 D to −4.00 D spherical equivalent and no more than 0.75 D of astigmatism.

Randomized evidence

A double-masked three-year trial of 144 children in four countries compared MiSight with a single vision daily lens.

Single use every day

Daily wear and daily disposal. No solutions or cases, which keeps the routine simple for families.

Longer follow-up

CooperVision reports that children fit between 8 and 12 progressed less than 1.00 D on average across six years of wear.

Other soft lens routes doctors weigh

MiSight is the labeled option. Some practices also fit other soft multifocal designs for myopia control, which is off-label and calls for a documented consent conversation.

  • First FDA-approved myopia-control lens
  • Off-label options need written consent
  • Uses the fitting skills you already have
  • Center-distance multifocals

In the BLINK trial, a +2.50 add center-distance soft multifocal slowed three-year progression by 0.46 D versus single vision lenses. Myopia control is an off-label use.

  • Abiliti 1-Day

Johnson & Johnson sells this soft myopia lens in some markets outside the US and has studied it in a US trial. Ask your J&J rep about US status.

  • Overnight ortho-k

For children who would rather wear nothing during the day, corneal reshaping lenses are the other contact lens path.

  • Glasses still matter

Every lens wearer needs current spectacles, and Stellest lenses now carry an FDA authorization for myopia control from age 6.

In the practice

Fitting and following a MiSight patient

The lens fit is routine. What makes it a myopia service is the baseline, the training and the measured follow-up.

Set the baseline

Cycloplegic refraction, axial length when you have a biometer, and a short risk history: parental myopia, outdoor time and near work.

Fit and train

Fit from the trial set in quarter-diopter steps, then teach the child and a parent insertion, removal and hygiene before dispensing.

Measure the trend

Recheck refraction and axial length on a fixed schedule and show the family the growth curve at every visit.

Questions doctors ask about MiSight

Can I fit MiSight on a 13-year-old?

The label covers children who are 8 to 12 when treatment starts. Starting older is an off-label decision the prescriber should document.

Does the lens replace glasses?

No. Children still need current glasses for the hours the lenses are out.

How do practices charge for it?

Most quote a program fee that covers the extra visits and measurements, with lenses billed separately or bundled. The coding and fees guide walks through common models.

What if the child keeps progressing?

Some clinicians add or switch therapy, for example pairing lenses with low-dose atropine. The plan stays with the treating doctor.

Do lens sales count toward the 15% participation credit?

No. The credit applies to eligible OTC orders on VisionRescue.com placed through RescueLink. Contact lenses and Rx products are excluded.

Where can my staff get trained?

CooperVision offers certification and free online staff training through its Brilliant Futures program, plus support from its reps.
