VSP Vision Care what joining the network involves.

VSP has worked alongside independent optometry for more than 70 years. This guide covers what VSP asks for before credentialing, the optional programs it runs for network doctors, and how the frame, lens and software companies in the VSP Vision family connect to them.

Patient at the front desk of an eye care practice

Quick answer

With VSP, the network and the programs are separate decisions.

VSP Vision calls itself the nation's only not-for-profit vision company and reports paying $2.9 billion to more than 40,000 network doctors, based on its 2023 claims data. Getting on the panel takes an NPI and a current CAQH profile. On top of the panel sit optional programs, Premier Edge and PECAA Max, that link directory visibility and rebates to buying Marchon and Altair frames and Unity lenses.

Key takeaways

  • Before applying, have an active NPI and an up-to-date CAQH profile.
  • The VSP Vision family includes Marchon and Altair eyewear, VSP Optics and Eyefinity software.
  • In 2026 Premier Edge has a single tier: one Marchon and Altair purchase target plus retinal imaging, free fittings and adjustments, and VSP Member Extras.
  • Through December 31, 2027, PECAA Max members can receive up to $15 more per VSP commercial patient exam.
  • Exam, lens and frame allowances vary by employer plan, so check each member before the visit.

The provider programs, side by side.

All optional. Most of the value is tied to buying products from the VSP Vision family.

A VSP visit, front desk to optical.

Keep routine vision care and medical eye care on separate tracks from the first phone call.

When What to do
Scheduling Ask why the patient is coming in. A routine refraction visit and a medical complaint follow different billing paths.
Before the visit Confirm eligibility and the member's exam, lens and frame benefits in VSPOnline, which VSP reaches through Eyefinity.
In the optical Show what fits inside the frame and lens allowance and quote any overage before the order is placed.
Checkout File the claim, then recommend the home-care items the plan does not pay for.
Practice pearl

Model Premier Edge before you chase it. The banner and the Promise pay off when your frame board already leans Marchon and Altair; when it does not, the purchase target reshapes your inventory more than your patient flow.

RescueLink

Send the cash-pay products home with the patient.

Vision and medical plans rarely pay for the drops, lid care and supplements a patient uses at home. Send the exact items by text or email; the patient orders in one tap, refills can run on auto-ship, and your practice earns a 15% participation credit on eligible OTC orders on VisionRescue.com. Contact lenses and Rx products are excluded.

  • No setup fee, subscription or minimum
  • One-tap ordering for the patient
  • Optional auto-ship on refills
  • Your recommendation stays with your practice

Questions practices ask

Do I need CAQH to join VSP?

Yes. VSP lists a current CAQH profile and an NPI number as prerequisites for its provider interest form.

Is Premier Edge required to see VSP members?

No. Network participation and Premier Edge are separate. Premier Edge criteria are a Marchon and Altair purchase target plus retinal imaging, free fittings and adjustments, and VSP Member Extras.

What is PECAA Max?

A membership tier of Professional Eyecare Associates of America for VSP private practices. It carries the VSP exam rebate, Marchon and Altair frame rebates and hiring support.

Can a dry eye visit go to VSP?

A medical eye complaint is generally billed to the patient's medical plan, not the vision plan. The Vision Plan vs Medical Billing guide covers the split.

Which companies sit inside VSP Vision?

VSP Vision Care, Marchon and Altair eyewear, VSP Optics and Eyefinity practice software, among others.

Where do I check a member's benefits?

In VSPOnline, reached through Eyefinity, before the patient arrives.
