Daily, Toric and Multifocal Lenses Choosing the modality and design for each patient.

Soft lenses differ by replacement schedule, material and optical design. Matching those three to the patient's prescription, eyes and habits drives comfort, success and how often they reorder.

The choices

Five decisions behind every soft lens fit

Each decision narrows the families that fit the patient and shapes their reorder pattern.

Replacement schedule

Daily disposables skip cleaning; two-week and monthly lenses need a care system and a case.

Material

Silicone hydrogel lenses carry more oxygen; hydrogels remain in some daily and specialty lines.

Astigmatism

Toric lenses use stabilization so the cylinder axis stays in place on the eye.

Presbyopia

Multifocal designs spread distance, intermediate and near power across the optic; some families add multifocal toric options.

Wear schedule

Daily wear versus approved extended wear; overnight wear raises infection risk.

Matching patients to designs

Simple rules of thumb many practices use, always subject to the fit on the eye.

  • Ask about screens, sports and travel
  • Fit astigmatism, do not ignore it
  • Offer multifocals before readers
  • Part-time and new wearers

Dailies remove care steps and suit occasional wear and kids.

  • Astigmatic patients

Uncorrected cylinder causes blur and dropout; most families now offer torics.

  • Emerging presbyopes

A multifocal trial keeps patients in lenses instead of over-the-counter readers.

  • Dry or sensitive eyes

Material, replacement schedule and a dry eye workup can extend comfortable wear time.

Fitting

From trial to final prescription

Trial lenses, follow-up and a written prescription complete the fit.

Trial on the eye

Check centration, movement, rotation for torics and vision at all distances for multifocals.

Follow up

Confirm comfort and vision after real-world wear before finalizing.

Release the Rx

Give the patient the finalized prescription; the FTC sets a one-year minimum expiration unless there is a documented medical reason.

Questions practices ask

Are daily lenses always better?

They remove care steps and suit many patients, but reusable lenses still fit some budgets and prescriptions.

When should I fit a toric?

When uncorrected astigmatism affects vision. Many families now cover the cylinder powers most patients need.

Do multifocals work for everyone?

Success depends on expectations and fitting. Follow each manufacturer's fitting guide.

How long is a contact lens prescription valid?

At least one year under the FTC Contact Lens Rule, unless a documented medical reason supports a shorter period.

Do lens orders earn the participation credit?

No. Contact lenses are excluded from the 15% participation credit; care solutions ordered through RescueLink can qualify.
