Indications and Usage
A topical ophthalmic anesthetic for procedures requiring corneal anesthesia of short duration, such as tonometry, gonioscopy, and removal of corneal foreign bodies. Also used for short corneal and conjunctival procedures.
Dosage and Administration
For tonometry and removal of foreign bodies or sutures, instill 1 to 2 drops in each eye before the procedure. For short corneal and conjunctival procedures, instill 1 drop in each eye every 5 to 10 minutes for 5 to 7 doses.
Warnings and Precautions
- For topical ophthalmic use only; not for injection into the eye
- Prolonged use may cause permanent corneal opacification with accompanying visual loss
- The anesthetized eye should be protected from irritating chemicals, foreign bodies, and rubbing
- Not intended for prolonged patient self-administration
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.
Adverse Reactions
Occasional temporary stinging, burning, and conjunctival redness. Rare severe immediate hyperallergic corneal reactions with acute, intense, diffuse epithelial keratitis have been reported.
Storage and Handling
Refrigerate at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Protect from light and keep tightly closed.
