Imaging and Biometry the measurement layer behind surgical referrals.

Optical biometers, OCT and widefield imaging decide lens power, document disease and support co-management. Many optometric practices own some of this equipment already, which makes their measurements part of the surgical conversation.

Quick answer

Good biometry starts with a good surface.

Optical biometers measure axial length, keratometry and anterior chamber depth for IOL calculations. Their keratometry depends on a stable tear film; eyes with hyperosmolar tears showed more variable readings in a multicenter study. Treating the ocular surface first protects the lens calculation.

Key takeaways

  • Swept-source OCT biometry: IOLMaster 700 (ZEISS).
  • Low-coherence reflectometry: Lenstar LS900 (Haag-Streit).
  • Scheimpflug plus biometry: Pentacam AXL (OCULUS).
  • Other biometers include Topcon Aladdin and Nidek AL-Scan.
  • Repeat keratometry after treating dry eye.
