Specialty Lens Fitting Equipment The instruments behind GP, scleral and ortho-k fits.

Specialty fitting has moved from trial-and-error to measurement. Topographers, scleral profilometers, anterior segment OCT and lens design software cut chair time, reduce reorders and make complex fits repeatable.

What each tool does

Match the instrument to the fit

Corneal maps drive GP and ortho-k designs. Scleral fits need data beyond the limbus, which is where profilometry, OCT and impressions come in.

Placido topography

Maps the anterior cornea for GP, ortho-k and keratoconus monitoring; some units include lens design modules.

Scleral profilometry

sMap3D (Visionary Optics) and the Eaglet Eye Surface Profiler measure scleral shape to design the landing zone.

Anterior segment OCT

Shows central and limbal clearance and the edge profile of a scleral lens on the eye.

Impression-based lenses

EyePrintPRO from EyePrint Prosthetics builds a scleral lens from a mold of the ocular surface.

Design software

Programs such as EyeSpace import topography from the Medmont E300 or OCULUS Keratograph to design GP and scleral lenses.

Building the equipment stack

Most practices add tools in this order as specialty volume grows.

  • Start with a topographer
  • Add OCT or profilometry for sclerals
  • Use the lab's software
  • Diagnostic fitting sets

Scleral, GP and ortho-k sets from your lab partners remain the foundation of every fit.

  • Topographer

Required for ortho-k and keratoconus. Combination units like the Topcon MYAH add axial length for myopia care.

  • OCT or profilometer

Adds precision for scleral clearance and toric landing zones and reduces remakes.

  • Insertion and care tools

Plungers, stands and preservative-free saline for patient training and dispensing.

Workflow

A measured scleral fit

Data first, then one diagnostic lens, then a custom order.

Capture

Map the cornea and sclera and confirm corneal diameter.

Over-refract

Apply a diagnostic lens, let it settle and over-refract.

Design and verify

Send maps and refraction to the lab, then check vault and edges on OCT at dispensing.

Questions doctors ask

What should I buy first?

A corneal topographer. It supports ortho-k, keratoconus monitoring and GP design.

Do I need a profilometer for sclerals?

No, but it can shorten the path to a good landing zone, especially for toric or asymmetric sclera.

Is anterior segment OCT worth it?

It makes clearance and edge evaluation objective and helps explain fit issues to labs.

Can I bill for topography?

92025 describes corneal topography; coverage depends on payer and diagnosis. See the coding guide.

Where do I buy saline and insertion tools?

From the wholesale catalog, or send patients the items through RescueLink. Eligible OTC orders earn the 15% participation credit; contact lenses do not.
